Surprising Things That Cause Men’s Crashing Testosterone

A grim fact: there is an epidemic that is silently creeping into the lives of men in America: Low Testosterone (aka “Low-T)! This epidemic strikes men of all ages, and the results are not pretty:

  • Weak, shrinking muscles
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Depression
  • Brain fog
  • Maddening joint aches and pains
  • Insomnia and reduced quality of sleep
  • Weight gain and increased fat, especially around the midsection
  • Lower libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Irritability
  • And many more symptoms that affect a man’s quality of life

What caused this epidemic? And what can men do to stop and reverse it?

Good questions. Here are a few of the causes of this low testosterone epidemic:

  • Aging. Men’s testosterone levels explode in their teenage years and continue to grow throughout their 20s. At around age 30, the average man begins to lose testosterone at approximately 10% per decade if nothing is done to slow the loss down. Do the math. By the time a man hits 70, he has lost 40% of the manly hormone...again, if he has done nothing about it.
  • Our environment. As we are today, we have never been subject to a continual barrage of testosterone-destroying chemicals. Consider all the deodorants...shampoos...body lotions...shaving creams...soaps...plastic bottles...and countless other toxins that are loaded with Phthalates, a Frankenstein-like laboratory creation that wreaks havoc on our hormone systems, especially testosterone. Phthalates are estrogenic, which can feminize a man’s hormones. As a result of this toxic environment, even men in their teens and early 20s are experiencing a loss of testosterone.
  • Obesity. The obesity rate in the USA is skyrocketing. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the obesity rate between 2017 – March 2020 was an unbelievable 41.9 %, and the medical cost of this burgeoning trend was estimated at $173 billion in 2019. Obesity and low testosterone enjoy a symbiotic relationship. Numerous studies have found that fat cells metabolize testosterone into estrogen, which lowers testosterone. Also, being overweight lowers levels of the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG.) This crucial protein transports testosterone through the blood and delivers it to the cells. The formula is simple: less SHBG = less testosterone.
  • Stress. In our ever-connected, on-the-go, 24/7 society, it is not surprising that people report higher stress levels. High-stress levels result in high cortisol levels, the so-called “stress hormone.” Small amounts of cortisol are needed, but we are not wired to “be on” continually. Excess stress causes a lack of sleep, which lowers testosterone.
  • Beer. That’s right...beer! Any type of alcohol, when consumed in copious amounts, can wallop our testosterone. But beer seems to be a worse culprit since the hops ingredient in beer can have an estrogenic effect, which, again, lowers testosterone.
  • A lack of physical fitness. Regular challenging fitness training boosts testosterone. However, being a “couch potato” is debilitating to testosterone.

All of these causes are related. For example, chemicals can cause the pounds to pile on, which makes us lazy, and makes exercising a chore, which causes stress, which causes insomnia...a vicious circle.

So what can be done to slow this health-robbing train of Low-T?
